Trauma Therapy That Heals from the Inside Out: Inner Work in Sarasota
If you’re living with the effects of trauma, you may feel anxious, disconnected, overwhelmed, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve you. You may have tried talk therapy or even told yourself to “just move on”—but still feel like something deeper needs healing.
At my Sarasota-based therapy practice, I specialize in EMDR therapy, a powerful, evidence-based approach to trauma healing that helps your brain and body reprocess trauma from the inside out. I also draw inspiration from other inner-focused approaches like Internal Family Systems (IFS) and somatic therapy, which can help clients deepen their healing when they're ready.
Why Inner-Focused Trauma Therapy?
Trauma doesn’t just live in your memories—it lives in your nervous system, your body, and your inner world. For many people, that inner world becomes a place they try to avoid. And that makes complete sense—it’s often where the pain lives.
But healing isn’t about forcing yourself to relive trauma. In our work together, you are always in control. We go at your pace, and we only explore what feels safe and manageable for you. One of the most important parts of trauma therapy is learning to listen to your inner signals and honor your boundaries.
“Trauma is not what happens to you. Trauma is what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you.” — Gabor Maté
1. EMDR Therapy: Reprocessing Trauma to Release It
I am a trained EMDR therapist and offer EMDR in Sarasota (as well as to clients across Florida via telehealth).
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) uses bilateral stimulation—such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds—to help the brain process and rewire the memory networks where trauma is stored. It's not about reliving your trauma, but about helping your system complete the healing process it couldn’t finish at the time of the original event.
Clients often say EMDR feels like their nervous system is finally able to “let go.”
✅ EMDR is especially helpful for:
PTSD and C-PTSD
Anxiety and panic
Childhood trauma
Negative self-beliefs (“I’m not safe,” “I’m not enough,” etc.)
Medical or birth trauma
Single-incident trauma (accidents, assaults, etc.)
“The past affects the present even without our being aware of it.” — Francine Shapiro, EMDR founder
2. IFS (Internal Family Systems): Healing Through Parts Work
While I don’t offer formal IFS therapy, I often draw from its language and framework to support EMDR work.
IFS is built on the idea that we all have inner “parts”—like the anxious part, the protector, or the inner critic—that formed to help us survive. Instead of pushing them away, IFS invites us to get curious about what each part needs.
IFS is especially helpful for clients who:
Feel stuck in internal conflict
Experience shame or self-blame
Want to reconnect with their sense of self or identity
In EMDR, these parts often show up naturally. When they do, we take time to respect them and explore their role—only if and when you're ready.
3. Somatic Therapy: Listening to the Body
Trauma impacts the body just as much as the mind. That’s why I also incorporate body-based awareness into EMDR sessions when appropriate.
Somatic work doesn’t mean reliving pain—it means noticing sensations like tension, tightness, or stillness as valuable information. You’ll never be pushed to go deeper than what feels right. My role is to help you notice those signals and stay grounded as we explore them at your pace.
